12 ways to kick Blue Monday

12 ways to kick Blue Monday

Blue Monday, the third Monday in January, is considered one of the most depressing days of the year. Christmas is over, payday still hasn't come, it's 'back to' your normal routine. And it's cold. Whether its a myth or not, if you are feeling down at the moment, know you're not alone and there are small steps you can take to help lift your mood.

  1. Follow some funny accounts: we get our laughs from funny mums accounts such as mum_and_a_mic, kids_and_the_commute, tiredandtested and mykindamum. And while you're there, unfollow anyone who makes you feel negative about yourself, they're not needed.
  2. Family Fun Time: Plan a little family activity or outing. It could be a movie night, a carpet picnic, a board game marathon, baking together, or any other activity that your family enjoys. Spending quality time together can be a great mood booster.
  3. Healthy Meals: we know, we want to hibernate with carbs too. But nutrition can have a significant impact on mood. Cook a healthy and delicious meal together as a family. Involving children in the process can make it a fun and an educational experience. Check out tamingtwins for family meal ideas.
  4. Move your body: Physical activity is a natural mood enhancer. Whether it's a walk, a dance party at home, or wrap up for a trip to the local park, moving togetherrelease endorphins and improve everyone's mood.
  5. Mindfulness and Relaxation: Think about incorporating mindfulness or relaxation techniques into your day. This could be a short family meditation session, deep breathing exercises, or even just some quiet time for everyone to unwind. Check out Shoorah for support
  6. Express Gratitude: Take some time to reflect on the positive aspects of life. Write them down in a diary or on your phone or share things you're grateful for as a family. It could be simple things like a cosy home, good health, or the love you share.
  7. Plan Something Exciting: Look forward to the future by planning a family event or holiday. The anticipation of something exciting can lift spirits and provide a positive focus.
  8. Connect with Loved Ones: Reach out to friends or family members. Social connections are important for well-being, and a phone call or video chat can provide emotional support.
  9. Create a Positive Environment: Decorate your living space with uplifting colors, pictures, or items that bring joy. A positive environment can have a positive impact on mood.
  10. Set Realistic Goals: Rather than focusing on the negatives, set small, achievable goals for the day. Celebrate accomplishments, no matter how small, to foster a sense of achievement.
  11. Encourage Open Communication: Create an environment where family members feel comfortable expressing their feelings. Sharing thoughts and emotions can be therapeutic and strengthen family bonds.
  12. Get creative: whether you enjoy painting, crafts, knitting, DIY, drawing, reading or writing, do something creative to spark joy
