Anonymous #BreakTheBias: My Proudest Achievment Is Also The One That Causes Me The Most Upset

This March, we’re celebrating Mum & More month. We know that becoming a mum can change your world entirely and whilst that’s often an incredible change, many of us feel lost or forget who we are.

As part of our International Women’s Day celebration this year, we asked you for your stories and experiences surrounding gender stereotypes, bias, and how you challenged perceptions of women and motherhood.

“Imagine a gender equal world. A world free of bias, stereotypes and discrimination. A world that’s diverse, equitable, and inclusive. A world where difference is valued and celebrated. Together we can forge women’s equality. Collectively we can all #BreakTheBias.

Celebrate women’s achievement. Raise awareness against bias. Take action for equality.”

The following submission comes from an anonymous Mum & You customer, who shares her experience with gender bias, stereotypes, and her personal achievements.

I personally found the postnatal experience in hospital pretty dire. I was either ignored or spoken down to. At one point I was asking questions and the woman literally turned away from me and answered them to my husband instead. I think that mums in general are still expected to shoulder the majority of the mental burden of running a household. My husband is wonderfully supportive, but I’m still responsible for ensuring our family’s life actually works.

I’ve found since having a son that there is definite gender bias. My friends obviously would rather have girls and are more excited about their pregnancies when they find they have girls. Little comments from my parents. My mum clearly is more excited about her granddaughter, who is 6 months older than my son. She gets much more praise and attention.

To be honest my proudest achievement is also the one that causes me the most upset and anxiety. Surviving a traumatic birth and awful postnatal experience, then launching straight into covid lockdown, then a TFMR that I had to deal with alone. I’m still processing and dealing with the after-effects of all of this
