What is Earth Day?

Earth Day is an annual event celebrated on April 22nd to demonstrate support for environmental protection. It was first celebrated in 1970 and is now observed in more than 190 countries worldwide. Earth Day serves as a reminder of the importance of environmental conservation and promotes actions to help protect the planet. It is a day to reflect on our impact on the environment, consider ways to reduce our carbon footprint, and take action to create a more sustainable future. Earth Day events often include activities such as tree planting, beach cleanups, and educational workshops on environmental issues.

At Mum & You, we don’t take our Earth for granted.

Ever since we launched, we have been keeping a close eye (and ear) on the discourse surrounding plastic pollution. The UK government is set to ban plastic wipes in England which is amazing news! We can’t believe there are leading brands still making wipes containing plastic. Mum & You are so proud that our wipes have always been plastic-free (even before it became fashionable!). From the very beginning, Mum & You biodegradable* baby wipes were created using sustainably sourced, naturally derived viscose – a special material made from the most abundant and renewable wood fibre on Earth. Our baby wipes are plastic-free, plant-based and contain 99.4% water to ensure ultimate kindness to baby’s skin, and contain zero plastic.

Our baby wipes come in 100% recyclable packaging too, meaning you can easily recycle empty packets with soft plastics and plastic bags at your local supermarket.

Did you know our biodegradable baby wipes disintegrate faster than an apple core. Yep, we tested it! We at Mum & You take our eco credentials very seriously, so we asked some clever scientists in lab coats to conduct a test for us to see how quickly one baby wipe disintegrates compared to an apple core in simulated landfill conditions.

The results are incredible! The test shows that Mum & You biodegradable baby wipes disintegrate in only 3 days, compared to an apple core which took 7 days in simulated landfill conditions**.

According to a statistic provided by The Marine Conservation Society, 18 wet wipes were found on average per 100m of beach at the Great British Beach Clean 2020. They state that wet wipes are one of the most common litter items found on UK beaches. Wet wipes can end up on our beaches and in the environment as they’re often mistakenly flushed down the toilet, rather than being disposed of in the bin. Our baby wipes should be disposed of in your household bin or compost bins (as long as they don’t have poo on!).

Our biodegradable wipes were also featured on BBC News, during a news segment about politicians campaigning to ban all wipes containing plastics. Soon after, British supermarket Tesco took all plastic wipes off its shelves, with health and beauty retailer Boots following suit.
