National Baby Swimming Week is dedicated to highlighting the incredible benefits of swimming for babies and toddlers. Swimming is not only fun but also supports motor skills, boosts confidence, and strengthens the parent-child bond. This week encourages parents to take the plunge with their little ones and enjoy this rewarding activity together. If you’re looking to take your baby swimming, here are our top tips for making it a little easier.
Tips for Taking Your Baby Swimming:
- Plan Ahead: Packing ahead can save you from the rush. Have nappies, wipes, and a couple of dry towels within easy reach for quick changes. Many parents swear by setting up the changing area before getting in the pool, so you’re ready to go as soon as swim time is over. If your baby is older nappy pants are quicker to change them into after swimming.
- Keep Your Baby Warm: Babies can get cold quickly. Consider a baby wetsuit if the water temperature is cooler. And for after swimming have a cosy towel or hooded robe ready to wrap them up immediately as soon as you get out (we suggest you keep it by the poolside) and have a second dry one in the changing room to dry them off.
- Quick-Dry Techniques: Hooded towels work wonders to keep their heads warm, and baby ponchos or robes can help absorb water quickly. You could also use one for yourself to keep you warm while you get your baby ready first.
- Moisturise After Swimming: Chlorine can dry out sensitive skin, so having an easy-to-use moisturiser is crucial. The Face The Day Stick from Mum & You uses soothing, natural ingredients and the handy stick is quick and handy to apply. Plus it absorbs quickly without being greasy.
- Snacks and Hydration: Swimming is tiring for little ones! Pack easy to grab snacks for older babies, and keep a water bottle handy to keep them (and you) hydrated. A little snack can be a great motivator for getting through the changing process without fuss. For younger babies have a bottle of milk ready or breastfeed. Don’t forget the wipes for quick clean ups.
- Choose the Right Swim Gear: A snug swim nappy is essential to avoid accidents in the pool. Look for ones that fit well and are easy to change.
- Arrive Early for Calm Transitions: Give yourself extra time before and after the session. Arriving early helps you settle in without feeling rushed, gives you time for anything unexpected (such as poonami, meltdown or give you time to go the loo yourself) and makes the experience more enjoyable for both you and your baby.
National Baby Swimming Week is all about enjoying the water and creating joyful memories with your little one. It’s a chance to make the first swim a positive and comforting experience. For more tips, events, and stories, check out Water Babies. Dive in and make a splash!
